Planned Parenthood center proudly displays painting titled by community member
Planned Parenthood of San Diego & Riverside Counties congratulates Asttrid Velasco, who recently won the “Name Our Painting” contest. The vibrant canvas, titled The Bill of Life was created by local graffiti artist Pres One of Writerz Blok and is on display at the Euclid Avenue Francis Torbert Center in Southeastern San Diego.
“We invited the community to suggest names for the painting, which incorporates key themes, like Rights, Respect and Responsibility, as well as our Get Yourself Tested campaign,” said Vernita Gutierrez, Director of Community Development for PPSDRC. “There were many wonderful title suggestions, but ultimately The Bill of Life was chosen because it captured the message and the feeling of the painting.
Velasco, a 24-year-old graduate of Southwestern College, said she was delighted her title was chosen. “Having self-respect enforces responsibility in making decisions that will impact your life,” she said when asked how her title relates to the artwork. “It gives you the right to shape and plan the life you want to live. You hold the power in your hands to build your future and become who you want to be.”
