“Fashion Movement” Theme Gives Student-Run Event Momentum
On May 10th, San Diego Mesa College students will showcase their 32nd annual fashion show, themed “Fashion Movement.” The annual runway exhibition is created and produced by students from the college’s Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing programs.
The event culminates the efforts of four months of planning and showcases students work, their creativity and talents, and what the Southern California fashion industry has to look forward to when they graduate.
All aspects of the production are executed entirely by students. The 100-plus fashions that will come down the runway are original designs, conceived and constructed by fashion design students. The fashion promotion class coordinates the execution of the show – including publicity, fundraising and event production. (Mesa’s media majors take care of lighting and audio, air and make-up services are provided by cosmetology students from San Diego City College.
Themed “Fashion Movement,” the event carries through with fast-paced sections, featuring evening wear, sportswear, children’s wear, millinery, retro re-do (recycled clothing), non-fabric clothing creations, and more. The theme was inspired by movement of clothing and the fast-paced fashion industry which is constantly changing, constantly evolving, and constantly in “movement.”
Mesa College fashion graduate, Thomas Lavone, is this year’s guest designer. His fashions have been featured in the TV show Jerseylicious. The show will also feature original design collections of advanced students.
The show lands on Mother’s Day weekend, which offers a great night out for moms, sons and daughters. There will also be a silent auction before the show. Items and services collected from businesses and individuals around San Diego will benefit student scholarships.
The show will be at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina on Harbor Island Drive on May 10th, 2013. Pre-show festivities begin at 5:30 pm with the VIP Reception, Silent Auction and Opportunity Drawing. Show time is 7:30 pm.
VIP tickets are $50; $20 general admission with discounts for students and presale. Visit www.sdmesa.edu/fashion for more information
