On behalf of the Chicano Park Steering Committee, we want to invite you to the “End of the Mural Restoration Celebration:

Stan Rodriguez of the Kumeyaay Nation, will open the celebration by blessing the event.
Six Danzante Groups: Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca, Danza Mexi’coyotl, Toltecas en Aztlan & Danza Atlachinole, Danza Coatlicue Cemilitzli, and Danza Quetzalhuzilin will bless the newly restored murals.

There will be Speakers, and Music by “Agua Dulce”.
Artist will have their art on display and for sale.

Eye-opening Sights of Mexico at The Muck!
A unique look into the Mexican and Chicano experience

FULLERTON – The Muckenthaler Cultural Center will host the opening reception of a new gallery exhibit, “Open Your Eyes/Abre Los Ojos,” on Thursday, August 30th at 6:30 pm. The evening will also feature a performance by Grupo Folklorico Monte Alban at 7 pm. Guest curator Joseì Lozano presents this celebration of Mexican, Mexican-American, and Chicano art centered on the state of Michoacan from private collections in Southern California.

The exhibit will run from August 30th through November 4th showcasing art from the collections of Armando Duron, Miguel Echeverria, Anita Miranda, and Enrique Serrato. Works by Frank Romero, Gilbert Lujan, Salomon Huerta, Margaret Garcia, Yreina Cervantez, Barbara Carrasco, Gronk and others will also be on display. In addition, guest curator Joseì Lozano, will showcase his personal artwork inspired by such themes as Mexican wrestlers, paper dolls, Mexican movie imagery, clowns, lotería, and figures in midair.

Grupo Folklorico Monte Alban will be joining the Muck for their tenth performance, showcasing the traditional regional folk dances and musical styles of Mexico. With performances including Mariachi music, huapangos with African, Spanish, and Indigenous influences, polkas; and danzones with Cuban origins, Grupo Folklorico Monte Alban takes the audience on a tour of Mexico and its history.

Funk Legends The Family Stone to Perform at In Concert for Cancer Sept. 8 on USS Midway Museum
Show to Benefit Scripps Cancer Programs; Tickets Available Now

Legendary funk recording artists The Family Stone – featuring original members of Sly and the Family Stone – will perform at the second annual In Concert for Cancer on Saturday evening, Sept. 8 on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum. Proceeds from the concert will benefit cancer survivorship programs at Scripps Cancer Center.

Opening for The Family Stone will be contemporary jazz pioneers Jeff Lorber Fusion, featuring Eric Marienthal. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and musical performances will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Tickets for the Sept. 8 In Concert for Cancer are available at www.scripps.org/inconcertforcancer. General admission tickets are $50. Tickets for premium seating (rows two through six) are available for $75 and front-row seats are $100.

Barona Celebrates Native American Culture at the 42nd Annual PowWow over Labor Day Weekend

The Barona Band of Mission Indians invites you to experience Native American culture at the 42nd annual Barona Powwow on Friday, August 31 from 6 to 11 p.m. and Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2 from 1 to 11 p.m.

Since its inception in 1970, the Tribal celebration has grown into a three-day event featuring traditional Tribal dances, signing and music, a hand drum contest, authentic Native American food and exquisite handcrafted arts and jewelry. In addition, more than 200 dancers from across the country will compete for more than $60,000 in cash prizes.

The festivities will take place at the Barona Baseball Field (just one mile north of Barona Resort & Casino) on the Barona Indian Reservation, located at 1095 Barona Road in Lakeside. El Festival de Vela Embellezerá el Embarcadero de San Diego en Septiembre

El Festival de la Vela del 2012 patrocinado por el Museo Marítimo de San Diego transformará el Embarcadero en un parque náutico. Una serie de barcos extraordinarios y más de veinte barcos de vela nos visitarán del 31 de agosto al 3 de septiembre de este año. El festival se lanza con un majestuosos desfile de barcos y navios en la Bahía de San Diego el día jueves 30 de agosto. El desfile comienza a las 11:00 am y se puede disfrutar del Embarcadero, la Isla Harbor, la Isla Shelter y desde Coronado. El festival ofrece música, exhibición de distintos barcos, apetitosas comidas y deliciosas bebidas de una gran variedad de puestos; también ofrece actividades para familias, un zoológico para niños y una serie de puestos con una gran variedad de articulos de venta con más de 150 vendedores.

Desfile de Vela

El Festival se lanza con un grandioso desfile en la Bahía de San Diego a las 11:00 am el día jueves 30 de agosto. Más de veinte veleros encabezados por un navío de la Marina Americana entrarán al Puerto de San Diego en una procesión náutica. Los mejores lugares para observar este magnifico desfile es del Museo Marítimo, el Museo Nacional Cabrillo, igual que en sitios comerciales en la isla Shelter, la Isla Harbor y el Embarcadero. El desfile termina a las 2:00 pm y el festival comienza el día viernes 2 de septiembre a las 9:00 am.

Barcos Festivos

El festival incluye más de veinte veleros y otros barcos extraordinarios de distintas partes. Barcos que nos visitan incluye el velero oficial de California, el Californian, igual que el velero Bill of Rights, Irving y Exy Johnson y otros más. Zona Para Niños

Actividades para niños serán ofrecidas los cuatro días del festival con una serie de juegos, un pequeño zoológico y otras actividades. El zoológico está abierto sábado, domingo y lunes de 11am a 4:00pm. La zona para niños está incluida en la admisión general.

Baja Blues Fest in Rosarito Beach – Tickets On Sale Now!

Rosarito Beach – On Saturday August 25, 2012, Rosarito Beach, Baja California and the Pacific Ocean will be the backdrop of the highly anticipated Baja Blues Fest at the Historic Rosarito Beach Hotel. This event, world-class blues music and regional art come together to create an experience not to be missed.

In the spirit of such great charity musical festivals such as Glastonbury and Farm Aid, the Baja Blues Fest will bring bands together to celebrate music and help the needs of others. The Baja Blues Fest on August 25, 2012 in Rosarito Beach, Baja California is classified in the same vein. Celebrating the world of blues, the forbearer of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and is an event that is all about “Helping Children with the Blues.”

All proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities that rely on donations to carry out their activity. Any person attending this amazing event will automatically contribute to the cause by purchasing a ticket which costs $20 if paid in advance and $25 if purchased on location.
