Public Library Screens 13 Ghosts as Part of the Schlockfest Film Series

The San Diego Public Library will screen the film 13 Ghosts on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. in the third floor auditorium of the Central Library, located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego. The film is a homage to the classic B movies from Hollywood’s Golden Age. This event is FREE to the public.

Hard times have fallen on Cyrus Zorba and his family.  That is until his uncle, the late Dr. Plato Zorba, leaves them his dingy old house. Things are beginning to look bright for the Zorbas until they discover that the Doctor kept a bizarre collection of 12 ghosts. To add to the chaos, there is a treasure hidden somewhere in the house and the Zorba family members aren’t the only ones after it.  It’s going to take some special help from a pair of extraordinary goggles and an unlucky 13th ghost to help the family rid the house of the specters and secure their hidden fortune.

Filmmaker William Castle was a fan of using gimmicks to promote his films and 13 Ghosts was no exception. “Illusion-O” allowed audience members to watch the film with or without the ghostly images by using blue and red cellophane glasses. Not to be confused with 3-D glasses popular at the time, the red intensified the ghosts while the blue made them disappear.

Tradition Comes Alive at Guajome’s First Día de los Muertos

The community is invited to celebrate Día de los Muertos — or the Day of the Dead — in a vibrant family festival at historic Rancho Guajome Adobe in Vista.

The festival is a first for Guajome, but Día de los Muertos is a widely celebrated 3,000-year-old Mexican tradition, a time when lost loved ones return home to their families in spirit to enjoy the best of life once again.

Día de los Muertos at Rancho Guajome takes place from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2210 N. Santa Fe. Ave. in Vista. Admission is $2 for adults 13 and older, $1 for children ages 4-12 and free for children under 3.

Altars of remembrance built by community members, with symbolic offerings such as food, toys and flowers, will be on display throughout the 22-room adobe ranch house.

Outside, Ballet Folklorico troops, norteño act “Los 4 de San Diego” and female equestrian drill team “Escaramuza Charra las Golondrinas” will entertain. Kids can get their faces painted, ride in a tractor-drawn wagon, or take part in numerous hands-on activities including a “ghost-making” craft, adobe brick-making and tissue flower-making.

Food, arts and craft vendors, and exhibits will also be on hand.
