26th Annual YMCA of San Diego County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award Breakfast Hosted by the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA
The YMCA of San Diego County is delighted to announce the 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award Breakfast on Fri., Jan. 14, 2011, 6:30 a.m. at the Town & Country Resort Hotel, 500 Hotel Circle North, San Diego, CA 92108. Tickets are $40.
The event is highlighted by keynote speaker, Rev. Calvin S. Morris, Ph.D. Executive Director of the Community Renewal Society, a faith-based social justice advocacy organization in Chicago focusing on issues of race and poverty.
A civil rights and human rights activist, Rev. Calvin S. Morris worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., serving as Associate Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Operation BreadBasket (now Operation PUSH) in Chicago, under the leadership of Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., from 1967-71. He was Executive Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, founded by Mrs. Coretta Scott King soon after her husband’s assassination, from 1973-76. He also was a university school professor and theological dean from 1976-1998.
The breakfast will not only memorialize and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King; it will also recognize community leaders of the past, present and future including this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Dignity Award winner.
This award is given each year to a person who most exemplifies the work and character of Dr. King. The honorees of the past encompass outstanding qualities of volunteerism, philanthropy and activism in the San Diego community.
All proceeds benefit the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA that serves an ethnically diverse community of over a quarter of a million people in Southeastern San Diego.

As you take down the Christmas tree, remember its Recyclable!
‘Tis the season to recycle and I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) is breaking down the post-holiday basics, starting with recycling your Christmas tree. Every December, ILACSD’s Disposal Solution Center provides accurate information for the proper recycling of holiday trees. Instead of overcrowding local landfills with holiday trees, collected trees can be ground up into high quality mulch or composted and used to enrich soils for next years’ trees and poinsettias. Most waste haulers offer special holiday tree recycling programs to pick up trees with yard waste on regular collection days. In addition to curbside pick-up, tree drop-off sites are located in the communities of Carlsbad, Coronado, El Cajon, Escondido, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, National City, Ramona, San Diego, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach, Vista and Unincorporated County.
Your tree is not the only item you can recycle; wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, packaging peanuts are also accepted for recycling in many places. Plus, remember to donate unwanted electronics, clothing, and toys to local charities for reuse. “I Love A Clean San Diego bridges the gap between residents and recyclers, giving San Diegans the opportunity to make the right choice for the environment,” says Pauline Martinson, ILACSD’s Executive Director. Vista Library Hosts Investment and Retirement Planning Workshop
On January 5 at 6 p.m., the Vista library, located at 700 Eucalyptus Ave, will be hosting an investment and retirement planning workshop in coalition with the Housing Opportunities Collaborative (HOC). This workshop is free and will cover a variety of topics relating to financial and legal concerns when looking at investment and retirement options.
Some of the topics that will be addressed include: types of investments, financial planning, and budgeting to ensure financial security in retirement. The HOC is providing a professional speaker on the subject who will assist customers in any way possible. This workshop is in line with the San Diego County Library’s mission to inform, educate, inspire, and entertain. “This workshop will address a need that the Vista community has identified,” County Library Director José Aponte says, “and it is our partnership with the HOC that offers the library the opportunity to provide our community with these vital tools and resources.” Vino Pajanor, President and Executive Director of the HOC, agrees that these partner workshops provide “an invaluable opportunity to empower communities by sharing available resources and knowledge.”
