Adelante Mujer Conference: Latinas Inspiring Young Latinas

Conference Celebrating 18 Years of Inspiration

    The Adelante Mujer Conference is an all day celebration hosted by a committee of educators and community members, from four districts in the South Bay, in hopes of inspiring a higher percentage of Latinas to continue their education beyond high school. The 18th Annual Adelante Mujer Conference will provide various presentations by professional San Diego Women who serve as exceptional examples for younger Latinas and their mothers. Many presenters have had to overcome barriers and struggles in order to accomplish their success. The festivities will include a small breakfast, lunch and entertainment.

    This year’s Adelante Mujer Conference will take place at Eastlake Middle School on March 5, 2011 from 7:45 am – 2:00 pm for girls in grades 6th-10th and their mothers. Approximately 800 students are expected to attend the event. A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Latina senior who has maintained a high grade point average while being actively involved in her community. The keynote speaker and presentations all provide the encouraging message of the importance of taking pride in one’s culture while making make positive decisions to attain economic self-sufficiency. Adelante Mujer presents an opportunity to maintain and strengthen the connection between students, schools and the community. In 2005-2006 only 34% of Latinas met the university eligibility requirements within the Sweetwater Union High School District. This conference demonstrates what one can achieve with a post-secondary education and the quality of life that may bring.

Art Council Annual Fundraising Auction

    The Grossmont College Art Council is proud to present the Grossmont Art Council Fund-raising Auction/Exhibition. The Hyde Gallery is exhibiting the work of 18 established local artists representing a variety of disciplines. Though brief in its duration, the scope of this exhibition is significant: two dimensional work in acrylic to three dimensional work in ceramic will be featured. The work of Bobbie Fisher, Daphne Hill, David Fobes, Suda House, Terri Hughes, David Hewitt to mention a few of the artists that will be providing our patrons with a broad appeal.

    Our guests can preview and bid on their favorite works during the week as well as Friday evening between 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The winning bids will be announced at 9:00 p.m.

    The proceeds of any sales will go to the Art Council Student Awards Program.

            The exhibition will run from March 7 – March 10, 2011. The Evening’s Event will include a Silent Auction of all the donated art, Appetizers, Spirits and Music and is scheduled for March 11th from  7-10 p.m., Bidding closes at 8:30 p.m. Friday night. The Gallery hours are: Monday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free. Parking is available during the exhibition with the purchase of a permit from the vending machine in lot #1F.  Complimentary parking is available ONLY on the evening of the opening in lot #1.

Chula Vista Relay For Life  High Tea To Honor Survivors

     The American Cancer Society Relay For Life and the San Ysidro Women’s Club members will honor cancer survivors from the area with a High Tea on March 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Chula Vista Women’s Club. The groups hope to enroll 100 local survivors, in this 100th anniversary year for the City of Chula Vista.

    The tea also serves as a kickoff, as the Chula Vista Relay For Life volunteers prepare for their 2011 weekend celebration to be held at Chula Vista High School on April 30. This year marks the sixteenth annual Relay For Life in Chula Vista which has become a traditional community spring time celebration.

    Co-chairs for this year’s High Tea are Pati Stephens and Beatriz Jocobo. “We want to honor those people who have made the fight and won”, said Stephens. “Their success and courage can become an inspiration to others who may have been recently diagnosed with cancer”.     Both women are quick to point out that they also wish to encourage community members to enroll in Relay For Life. “We are reaching out to the community as we continue to grow our Relay For Life”, said Jocobo, herself a cancer survivor. “We certainly want survivors and their families to join, but anyone can get involved, anyone wanting to make a difference – to organize and recruit fundraising teams, garner community support, coordinate logistics, seek refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment and lend a hand to ensure the success of the 2011 event”.             Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups, people from all walks of life – all aimed at celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost, and fighting back against the disease.

SBA Lending Initiatives for Underserved Communities

    Lenders who participate in the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Preferred Lender Program can approve loans through the agency’s new Small Loan Advantage program beginning Feb. 15. At the same time, the agency will begin accepting applications from community-based, mission-focused lenders who are interested in making SBA-guaranteed loans through the new Community Advantage program.

    Both the Small Loan Advantage and Community Advantage programs were announced in December as part of the agency’s efforts to increase the number of lower dollar loans being made to small businesses and entrepreneurs in under-served communities.

    Built on what the agency refers to as its “Advantage” platform, both Small Loan Advantage and Community Advantage offer a streamlined application process for SBA-guaranteed 7(a) loans up to $250,000. Advantage loans will come with the regular 7(a) government guarantee, 85 percent for loans up to $150,000 and 75 percent for those greater than $150,000.

    Community-based organizations interested in becoming Community Advantage lenders should contact the closest SBA district office.

Congress of History of San Diego and Imperial Counties Annual Conference

    This year’s two-day annual history conference, entitled They Made a Difference: The Unsung History of Women in the San Diego Region is to be held March 4 & 5, 2011. Celebrating March as Women’s History Month, it will highlight some of the great unknowns of local women’s histories. From our local Indian women to the Spanish and Mexican colonial periods and on – through the 20th century – each layer of history will be revealed.

    “Topics will range from groundbreaking design professionals, to women aviators, to the bawdy women of burlesque,” says Vonn Marie May, conference chair. “We plan to cover (or in some cases, uncover) the rich and robust history of the women of our region.” 

    In addition to the presentations, there will be two special events. Friday – Balboa Park Tours, led by Cultural Landscape Specialist Vonn Marie May; and Saturday – Vintage Costume Exhibition, the closing event, presented by the Women’s Museum of California (formerly known as the Women’s History Museum and Educational Center). The walking tour will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, and will go around the Exposition areas of Balboa Park. Included will be stories of politics, planning, architecture and horticulture.

    The two conference venue sites in Balboa Park will be: the Balboa Park Club Ballroom, on Friday, and the Recital Hall (located next door to the Puppet Theater, south of the Balboa Park Club) on Saturday. On both days, there will be exhibits and morning refreshments set-up in the Santa Fe Room, in the Balboa Park Club. Friday – 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday – 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration will open at 9:00 a.m. both days.

    Cost –– $25 basic entry fee covers both days; Seniors (65+) $20; and Students $15 (with student ID).
