College Students Create New Technology to Find Cheapest School Books Online

Recent college graduates and current students have created a new way to help fellow students save money and time when purchasing school books.  It’s called course-search technology, and it let’s students compare prices across the web for all their school books simultaneously, simply by entering their course schedule. The typical student sees savings of up to 75% in less than 5 minutes, for all their books collectively.

Jonathan Simkin, 22, is less than a year out of college and co-founded the website, now called SwoopThat, in response to personal encounters he had while still in school.  Specifically, Simkin was shocked at both how expensive school books were at his college bookstore, and how much time it took for students to find cheaper books online.

“The time factor is really what makes this technology unique,” says Simkin.  “Traditionally, students had to price-hunt book after book, which could take several hours. With SwoopThat, students select their courses, and the course-search technology returns every book they need and every major online merchant that sells those books. Students can compare prices from across the web for all their books simultaneously, including new, used, rental, and digital versions of each school book.”  SwoopThat is also introducing free digital textbooks into their search as well, to show students when they don’t have to pay for a book.

This technology is particularly important now, as the average college student spends $900 a year on school books, and these high prices are increasingly contributing to the growing lack of affordable education in the United States. While SwoopThat’s course-search technology supports roughly 130 schools nationwide, they remain optimistic that they can grow to over 300 schools in the next two months.
