Les Miserables, School Edition

Sweetwater Summer Theatre Institute Show

    Summer 2011 not-to-be-missed show is the presentation of the acclaimed musical Les Miserables, school edition, by the Sweetwater Summer Theater Institute.

    Les Miserables is being directed by Cynthia Stokes, a professional theatre director with numerous national credits. Serving as Assistant Director and Costume Designer is Mary Moss, drama teacher at Hilltop High. The Musical Director is Tony Atienza, who is director of choral music at the School for Creative and Performing Arts at Chula Vista High. A live student orchestra will be conducted by Russ Sperling, director of Visual and Performing Arts for the district. Theatre arts teacher Spencer Smith is serving as Choreographer.

 Northwest Civic Association Town Hall Meeting

    The next Northwest Civic Association Town Hall Meeting will be held in the auditorium of the Chula Vista Civic Center Library (at 4th & F), Wednesday, Aug. 10th at 6:00 p.m. Chula Vista Elementary School District Superintendent Francisco Escobedo and Sweetwater Union High School District Interim Superintendent Ed Brand will speak about the 2011/2012 school year for the local elementary & middle/high schools respectively. 15th Annual Lemon Festival Brightens Up Chula Vista

    Squeeze a day of fun into your summer by celebrating at the Lemon Festival! The free

festival is returning for the fifteenth year to downtown Chula Vista on Sunday, August 7.

    The event celebrates Chula Vista’s heritage as the once self-proclaimed “Lemon Capital of the World. The community is welcome to join the festivities on Third Avenue, from E to G Streets, beginning at 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Every year, the event increases in popularity bringing up to 40,000 visitors to enjoy a full day of family fun and activities.

    This year the agenda includes live entertainment on three stages, hand crafters, eating contests, and dozens of delicious international food options. Don’t miss new features like the Fantasy Hair Competition sponsored by Rico’s on 3rd Salon and a Centennial Spotlight at Memorial Park.

    Bands set to perform include Breezin, The Torrents, Candy N Company, Pink Army and more.

20th Annual Automobile Heritage Day
Twenty Years Celebrating the Automotive Industry in National City

    The 20th Annual National City Automobile Heritage Days will feature Porsche with a dazzling display of those cars from the very early models to the latest Super Cars now being produced.  The August 7th show will draw well over 250 entrants competing for awards in categories that range from turn of the century production cars to classics, muscle cars, race cars, and low riders.  Motorcycles will be shown in 6 separate classes.

    Automobile Heritage Day car competition will be held at the picturesque Kimball Park.  This 18 acre public facility is located just off National City Blvd. and the Mile of Cars.  There is no charge for spectators to view the vehicles that will be staged in selected groupings throughout the expansive area. The entry fee for those displaying their cars and motorcycles will be $35.  Pre-registered entrants prior to July 15th received a ticket entitling them to a delicious barbecue lunch.

    The days’ activities also include an 8:45a.m. parade prior to the show, great food from some of National City’s popular restaurants, a wide variety of live music performers and specialty business booths that add another element of entertaining for the attendees.
