Lemon Grove Library Hosts Special Event in Honor of Mexican American Pioneers

The community of San Diego is invited to honor Mexican American pioneers from the Lemon Grove Incident Era during a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration taking place on Wednesday, October 12 at 3 p.m. at the Lemon Grove Library, 8073 Broadway in Lemon Grove.  The celebration will include music, guest speakers, recognition awards, and the conclusion of Héctor Ericksen-Mendoza’s Hispanic Heritage Month photography exhibit which will be up at the library from October 3 through October 12.

The Lemon Grove Incident Era took place in 1930 and 1931 when a local school board attempted to build segregated schools for children of Hispanic origin. Residents boycotted and a court decision resulted in the first successful desegregation ruling in the United States. Music will include a classical guitar solo performance by José Rodríguez, followed by remarks by John Valdez, professor at Palomar College, who will discuss the landmark court case, along with Howard Cook of the City of Lemon Grove, photographer Héctor Ericksen-Mendoza, and Library Director José Aponte.  Special recognition will be given to Lemon Grove residents who were pioneers and activists for equality during the Lemon Grove Incident Era.

“The Lemon Grove Incident Era changed United States history and the lives of millions,” said Branch Manager Amparo Madera. “The library is the perfect place to honor the pioneers and activists who fought for civil rights and equality as the public library represents the freedom to learn.”
