Vista Library Launches Plazas Comunitarias Program

Program Prepares Spanish Speakers to Earn Elementary and Middle School Diplomas

San Diego County Library is launching a new program at the Vista Branch, 700 Eucalyptus Ave, which gives Spanish speakers an opportunity to take classes and work towards earning their elementary and middle school diplomas. Plazas Comunitarias is a partnership between the library, the Mexican Consulate, and Instituto Nacional para la Educación de los Adultos (INEA). Free classes will take place on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Vista Library.

“No one is more devoted to promoting education among diverse communities than SDCL is,” said Library Director José Aponte. “We were recently named the 2012 Library of the Year and we work tirelessly to improve our services, seeking out innovative ways to meet the needs of our communities. Plazas Comu-nitarias is one new way we’re meeting those needs, and we won’t be stopping here. We’re already looking for a way to expand this program to other branches, recognizing that free education is a need across the county.”
