Getting Up in Down Times

These challenging economic times are increasing stress for many of us, and increased stress can take its toll on the mind and body. Stress can interrupt your sleep pattern, leaving you fatigued and may even impair your immune system, causing your risk for illness to increase.

You may be wondering what you can do when it feels like things are out of control. How can you decrease stress and anxiety, and increase your physical and mental health? Studies from the Journal of Psychology and Sport have shown that participation in regular physical activity leads to a decrease in feelings of stress and anxiety, and an increase in mental clarity. So get up, get out, and be active!

Here are some ways to get up in an economically down time:

• Walk your dog 10 minutes longer than usual three times this week.

• Take a walk and explore the natural beauty around your neighborhood or office during your lunch.

• If you are a member of a gym, find a group fitness class to try for the first time and make an appointment with yourself to go. Don’t be intimidated; trainers and group fitness instructors are usually happy to share in a great experience by welcoming and teaching new participants.

• There are plenty of great places that don’t cost money to venture out to in our community and greater San Diego. Walk the numerous trails between communities throughout South Bay; some even connect parks for fun with the kids and/or pets. A trip to the J-Street Marina offers a breeze, beautiful scenery, and a great path to walk, run, or play. Make a trip downtown and walk along the Embarcadero, drive to Mission Bay and walk briskly along one of the many paths they offer, or go to the beach and walk briskly along the shore taking in the sound of the waves and the smell of the salt water.

• Brush the dust off that bike in your garage and hit the road or a trail for a nice refreshing ride.

• Plan a play day with friends and family. Play games like soccer, softball, or another sport or activity you and/or your friends/family enjoy.

• Find a local walk, run, or bike event to join. Check out www.active.com</p>

These are just a few ways to get active this week. It does not have to cost money to get involved in physical activity or to benefit from reducing stress. Call a friend, neighbor, or family member to meet you for any one of these activities. Whatever your choice is, get out, have fun, and remember you are benefitting your physical, emotional, and mental wellness.
