A new voice in Latin pop

Colombian Singer Tati accepts she’s a shy girl, especially when she had to film sensual scenes for the video of her song Ámame.

“I couldn’t concentrate,” said Tati, laughing, a few days ago when she visited San Diego to promote her debut álbum, El latido de mi corazón. “I met the model actor that same day, and I had to pretend I was in love with him, to capture the song’s essence. “It was really hard to shoot the video!”

But when Tati is on stage singing her pop love songs that have made her one of the young promises in today’s Latin pop, she stops being shy.

“I transform on stage,” Tati said. “I’m shy for certain things, but when it comes to singing, no one can stop me. When you have the public so close it gives you a lot of energy.”

Tati was in San Diego this week as part of the line-up in the latest EXA Party, sponsored by radio station EXA FM at 4th and B, in Downtown San Diego. There she shared the stage with singers Beto Cuevas and Reily Barba.

For her, visiting San Diego for the first time to be next to these singers, represents “a huge opportunity.”

“I have this opportunity to try to conquer the people of this region,” she said.

George Rivera, DJ at EXA FM in San Diego, said that Tati little by little is capturing people’s attention. Her song Ámame is played continuously on the radio station, because people request it, Rivera said.

“Tati is barely starting her career, but she promises to become the new star in the Latin pop genre in 2009,” he said.

Tati said that the EXA Party serves like a platform to introduce her music to San Diego. And opportunities like this are popping up all over the United States since her album was released in April.

The single El latido de mi corazón reached the 43 spot on Billboard. She’s currently on the 45th spot of the Hot Latin Songs, and 27 on Latin Pop.

She sang during half-time of the America-Cruz Azul game in El Paso last March.

And she just received a nomination as best new artist in the Premios Texas 2009, taking place in August.

“All of this has been a great surprise for me. I didn’t expect it to be so quick,” said Tati, who has lived in Miami for 10 years. “It’s very exciting.”

Tati describes her music as “very romantic, very passionate.” The album, which includes two songs from renown composer Kike Santander, is made up of love songs, pop songs, with a touch of dance music.

In her native Colombia Tati has become a revelation, since there are few pop singers there.

Tati’s goal is to continue conquering the U.S. and cross over to Mexico, where she lived for a year.

“I love what I’m doing. I’m enjoying every step,” she said.
