Community Notes:

School Auditorium Dedicated to Local Musician
School community recognizes impact of legendary musician Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez

On Wednesday June 12, 2013 the community will gather at King-Chavez Academies to present and dedicate their newly renovated auditorium to Chunky Sanchez. The auditorium renovation also included new murals by Chicano artist Sal Barajas. The renovation was part of a school improvement grant for King-Chavez Arts Academy where Mr. Sanchez was hired as an artist in resident. King-Chavez Arts Academy is a charter school in the San Diego Historic Barrio District of Stockton, a community in Greater Logan Heights.

Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez was born to Mexican immigrant parents in Blythe, California. As a teen, he joined the farm worker’s struggle for civil rights and the United Farm Workers Union. Chunky picketed and walked with Cesar Chavez and the struggle. While at San Diego State University, he developed his talents as a musician and activist. Chunky’s music became the anthem for the Chicano community in San Diego for the next 40 years, “we gotta educate not incarcerate.”

Sanchez has written songs about social struggles and Chicano culture. Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez is considered an elder in his community as well as a community organizer and a leading advocate on gang awareness and prevention.

“This is an opportunity to really recognize a local hero that has dedicated his life not only as a musical historian, or barriologist, but has also made an incredible impact on the youth and the entire community,” stated parent and King-Chavez board member, Silvia Leon.

The auditorium dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday June 12, 2013 5:00 pm at King-Chavez Academies, 415 31st Street San Diego, CA 92102. The San Diego Low-Rider Council, musicians and Teatro Izacalli will pay tribute; as well as children from the school and Mr. Sanchez’s family. The event will also host food sales, tacos and beverages as a fundraiser for the school groups.
