Public Library Screens – Inside Buffalo – By Visiting Afro-Italian Filmmaker Fred Kuwornu

Italian Film Festival Celebrates Black History Month with Filmmaker’s Visit

The San Diego Italian Film Festival (SDIFF) and the San Diego Public Library will host a screening of the award-winning film Inside Buffalo by Afro-Italian filmmaker Fred Kuwornu on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor auditorium of the Central Library, located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego. The screening is part of a series of coordinated events by SDIFF that explores the complex reality of citizenship, race and immigration in Italy. Director Kuwornu will be in attendance for a discussion after the film.

Inside Buffalo is an award-winning documentary that tells the story of the all Black 92nd “Buffalo Soldiers” Army Division which fought an extraordinarily brave campaign against the Nazis along the supposedly unbreakable Gothic Line in Tuscany. These American soldiers faced not only an extremely tough and cruel enemy – they also confronted ruthless racism from their own country. In Italy these troops met a white population that saw them not only as liberators but also as friends who represented the US with generosity, bravery and ultimate heroism, finally awarded with seven Medals of Honor in the 1990s by President Clinton. The filmmaker credits his work on Spike Lee’s Miracle at Saint Anna (2008) on location in Tuscany that inspired him to undertake this very personal journey of discovery culminating in this powerful documentary.

As a filmmaker, Fred Kuwornu has worked as a writer for Italian TV and produced several works with his own production company Struggle Filmworks. His most recent project is 18 Ius soli (Right of Soil) about Italian citizenship and the law that denies citizenship to 1,000,000 young people born in Italy of immigrant parents because they have no Italian blood. Future projects include “Paisan Soldiers” about Italian-American contributions in World War II and “I AM,” a film about the civil rights struggle in United States.
