The San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park is proud to announce the opening of its new exhibit, Lowrider Legends of San Diego that will run through June 2, 2013. This exhibit features some of the finest examples of lowriders created in the San Diego area.
These iconic cars have been part of the cultural landscape for decades. An ever evolving art form, lowriders have become an integral part of the San Diego experience. This exhibit was designed by Carlos C. de Baca.
This exhibit also highlights the life and work of David Aguilar. He learned his craft well over the years, and two of his signature lowriders are on display along with the rich history of how these cars evolved. A 1950 Chevrolet Fleetline and a 1935 Plymouth are the two examples of Aguilar’s work.
Other cars featured include: 1951 Chevrolet truck, 1950 Chevrolet, 1982 Cadillac, 1980 Monte Carlo, 1964 Chevrolet Impala, 1961 Chevrolet, 1949 Hudson, 1964 Buick Riviera, 1939 Chevrolet, and a 1952 Chevrolet truck. In addition, the exhibit also features a 2007 Harley Davidson and several pedal cars.
Lowriding car club banners, plaques, models, jackets, and other memorabilia are also included in the exhibit along with a display of hydraulic systems that raise and lower the vehicles.
Regular hours are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (the last admission at 4:30 PM). Admission prices are: $8.50 for adults, $6 for seniors (65 and over), $6 active duty military with ID, $5 students with ID, $4 children ages 6 – 15. Children under the age of 6 are admitted free of charge. The museum is free to all San Diego County residents and military with ID on the 4th Tuesday of each month. There is a $2 charge for residents to see special exhibits on Free Tuesdays. The museum is located at 2080 Pan American Plaza, Balboa Park.
