On October 11, Mesa College counselor Octavio Pierre Romero will be honored by the by the Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at their national conference in Seattle, Wash.
He is one of six individuals selected from professionals across the country to be recognized in various categories including exemplary leadership in science research, teaching, and mentorship of underrepresented minority science students. Romero will receive the Distinguished Community College Mentor Award.
Romero has worked at Mesa College since 1991. He has served as an adjunct counselor in the college’s equal opportunity and student retention programs, and has taught experimental coursework in American Indians Studies. In 2006, he took on the role as advisor for the Mesa College SACNAS chapter.
Born in Tijuana to a Mexican father and Cherokee mot-her, Romero received his asso-ciate’s degree from LA’s Pierce College. He went on to receive two bachelors degrees, in history and geography, and a minor in American Indian Studies from California State University, Northridge. He later went on to receive his masters in Educational Counseling from San Diego State University.
The national nonprofit organization SACNAS is devoted to advancing Chicanos, Hispanics and Native Americans in science.
