El Cajon Library Hosts Annual Multicultural Fiesta

Festivities, fun, friendship and food are the order of the day as the El Cajon Library, 201 E. Douglas Av, hosts its third annual Multicultural Family Fiesta, Saturday, April 14, from Noon to 3 p.m. The event also marks the San Diego County Library’s kickoff of the month-long festival, El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of Books), celebrating children’s reading. The fiesta is free of charge and the public is invited.

Featured entertainment includes La Fiesta del Pueblo Ballet Folklórico dance troupe, with students representing Cajon Valley Middle School, led by teacher Juan López; popular Los Angeles magicians Rafael & Katia, who will perform a bilingual show with much audience participation and humor; and the multi-award winning Arabina Middle Eastern Dancers starring founder/leader “Dilek.” The El Cajon Fire Department will hold tours of a fire engine, and the El Cajon Police Department’s K-9 division will give a police dog demonstration. The Día de los Niños celebration will include author visits and a free children’s book give-away. Many local organizations will take part in an “information fair.”

Refreshments will be served, courtesy of a large number of El Cajon restaurants and markets. Stories, crafts and a wide variety of activities will round out the day.

“We created the Multi-cultural Family Fiesta in 2010 as a way of bringing the community together and celebrating the rich cultures that make up El Cajon,” says Nancy Saint John, branch manager of the El Cajon Library. “The library is a welcoming center of the community, and it’s important to introduce residents to its array of free services.”

San Diego Public Library Launches New Downtown Verse Poetry and Spoken Word Program

The San Diego Public Library will launch a poetry and spoken word series called Downtown Verse during April, National Poetry Month on Monday, April 9 at 4:00 p.m. in the Lobby of the Central Library located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego. Downtown Verse will spotlight the poetry and spoken word scene in San Diego and feature area poets and spoken word artists on an occasional basis. Perfoming duo Hither and Yahn are the featured inaugural artists. This free event is open to the public.

Elizabeth Yahn Williams and Robert Thomas Lundy make up the performance-poetry duo Hither & Yahn. They met at a library poetry group several years ago and discovered in each other different poetry styles, but a compatible sense of humor. Since then, they have produced several poetry chapbooks and won awards for their work. They also edit the annual Summations Art/Poetry collaborative volume for Poets INC and the Escondido Municipal Art Gallery. More information about them and their work can be found at www.hitherandyahn.com.

A Kid’s Fishing Adventure is one of the most popular attractions during the event. And it’s free!
The fishing areas consist of submerged pens which have been stocked with mackerel provided by Everinghan Brothers Bait Company. There is one at each Landing: Fisherman’s, Point Loma Sportfishing and H&M Landing.

During “Day At The Docks” children ages 4-12 are provided rods, reels and assistance by members of the San Diego Rod & Reel Club and the San Diego Anglers. A Kid’s Fishing Adventure delivers hands on action for the first time angler. It’s lots of fun!

The Kids Fishing Adventure is open from 9 am to 4 pm. To avoid long waits in line, sign up early at the San Diego Rod & Reel Club booth for a reserved fishing time.

And there’s more! This year “Day At The Docks” will kick off a larger month long promotion to get kids fishing. Boats in the San Diego fleet will be offering “Kids Fish Free” promotions through May 31st, 2012.

During the entire month of May the San Diego Bay based sportfishing fleet will take kids fishing for Free on any open party ½ day, ¾ day or full day fishing trip when accompanied by a paid adult.

To be eligible, kids must be 15 or younger. One complimentary child’s ticket is earned with each adult fare. Reservations are required and this promotion is limited to space available. Mexican permits, if required are not included.

What a great way to introduce a child you know to the world of sportfishing! Make plans with your child today to go fishing in May! Kids Fish Free is honored at H&M Landing, Fisherman’s Landing and Point Loma Sportfishing.
