Community Notes:

Lincoln Acres Library Hosts Annual Celebration of Life in Honor of Staff Member

Jose Luis

Lincoln Acres Library staff member José Luis Rodriguez was murdered on November 23, 2007, just minutes before his eighteenth birthday. The community of Lincoln Acres and the Lincoln Acres Library staff honor his memory each year at the Celebration of Life. The Celebration is taking place on Saturday, October 22 from 1-3 p.m. at the Lincoln Acres Library, 2725 Granger Ave. This event is free and open to the public.

This year’s Celebration of Life includes a showcase of entertainment by local teens, including performances by Sweet and Easy Teen Shuffle, the teen rock band Yttrium, and Los Caporales de San Ysidro: Mariachi Juvenil. Other events include a Polynesian dance performance by the Monte Vista High School Polynesian Club, Supervisor Greg Cox presenting the annual José Luis Rodriguez Scholarship, face painting, craft booths, a community resource fair, and refreshments.

Each year, the Friends of the Lincoln Acres Library offer a scholarship in honor of Rodriguez, and present it to a student at Sweetwater High School.  Scholarship information can be found at http://sdcl.org/jlr-scholarship.html.  The murder of Rodriguez remains a mystery, and a $50,000 reward is being offered for its resolution.

“Every year we invite the community to come together in celebration of a wonderful person.  José was perpetually upbeat and loved helping kids and teens,” said Branch Manager José Ocadiz. “He continues to be an inspiration to us each and every day.”

Bonita-Sunnyside Library to Host Healthcare Job Fair

The Bonita-Sunnyside branch of the San Diego County Library and the South County Career Center will hold a job fair focused on employment opportunities in health-care. The job fair will take place on Tuesday, October 18 at the Bonita-Sunnyside Library, 4375 Bonita Rd, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  This is a great opportunity to explore careers in healthcare, and talk directly to employers.

More than fifteen employers will be onsite, representing dozens of occupations in the medical field. They include Scripps-Mercy Hospital, San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency, Heritage Senior Care and Promise Hospital. To see the most up-to-date list of participating employers, go to facebook.com/southcountycareercenter.

In addition, attendees will be able to have their resumes reviewed on the spot by Career Center staff.  People considering a career change as well as those entering the work-force and current healthcare workers are encouraged to attend.  Educational institutions such as Southwestern College School of Nursing and San Diego State University will be present to discuss the training required to make career transitions.

“This is an excellent way for people to assess the potential for careers in the fast-growing health care field,” says Hildie Kraus, Branch Manager.  “And the resume review is a very practical aspect of the fair as well.”
