9/11 Memorial Ceremony

   To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of September 11 terrorist attacks on our nation, Chula Vista Fire and Police Departments are holding “A Decade of Remembrance” memorial ceremony. Open to the public, the event is supported by the Otay Ranch Town Center, South Bay YMCA, the Olympic Training Center, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army.

            Held at the Otay Ranch Town Center, the day begins at 8:30 a.m. with a free family one-mile run/walk (registration at 8 a.m.). The memorial ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m., followed by a pancake breakfast at 9:30 a.m. From 10 a.m. to noon there will be demonstrations by fire, police, and military along with jumpy-jumps and face painting for children. Plan to attend on Sunday, September 11!

San Diego Firefighter Creating Local 9/11 Memorial 
Memorial includes steel from World Trade Center

    A firefighter with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is designing a 9/11 memorial that includes steel from the World Trade Center, which will be unveiled at a September 9 ceremony at Fire Station 21 in Pacific Beach at 10:30 a.m.

    Firefighter Tim Swanson, who works at Fire Station 21, designed a memorial that includes two polished aluminum columns inscribed with the names of the all of the emergency first responders who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. It will also incorporate a piece of steel from the Twin Towers and sit on a black concrete base. Swanson is donating his time and services. The other materials and labor were donated by Barnhart Balfour Beatty, Industrial Metal Supply, KMA Architecture, La Jolla Stone Etching and SDG&E. 

    The memorial will be unveiled at a ceremony featuring Fire Chief Javier Mainar, other city leaders, firefighters, and representatives from the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation, a is funding the memorial. Also speaking will be Retired FDNY Lieutenant Joe Torrillo who is known as the 344th firefighter. 343 firefighters lost their lives that day.

    The unveiling ceremony is one of two events planned by the Foundation to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Escondido Planning 9/11 10th Anniversary Event Featuring Free Navy Band Performance at Arts Center

    The City of Escondido and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido have partnered to present a free, open to the public event on Sunday, September 11, 2011 in observance of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. 

    At 5 p.m., family-friendly, patriotic activities will take place in the Center’s Lyric Court, followed by a 6 p.m. performance of the 45-piece Navy Band Southwest in the Center’s Concert Hall.  The concert will be preceded by a special ceremony featuring Escondido Police and Fire personnel.  Leading up to these events, there will be a reading of the names of those who died on 9/11 at the Train Depot in Grape Day Park from 1 – 5 p.m.

    Free concert tickets are available on a first come, first served basis by calling the Center for the Arts box office at (800) 988-4253.  The event is generously sponsored by Dr. David Tagge and Dr. Brad Bourcy.

    The City will also participate in the National Moment of Remembrance, established by unanimous U.S. Senate resolution, to memorialize the 9/11 attacks.  At 10 a.m. on September 11, fire, police, churches and businesses are encouraged to ring bells or sirens for one full minute as we cease all regular activity and “stop and remember.”
