The New Toltecas en Aztlan: New Artist Exhibit

As we approach the 40th Anniversary of the Centro’s opening in 1971 inside of a giant concrete circular building once used as a water storage tank, we look forward to the next 40 years of history.

To celebrate the future, we look towards the generation of emerging artists that encompass that spirit of resistance and passion for the arts that triggered the Chicana/o Cultural art movement in San Diego.

This show will be a historical tribute to the founders of the Centro Cultural de la Raza and a celebration of emerging artists currently doing work. The art will reflect this generation of artists, who have never exhibited at the Centro, but are making a name for themselves outside of the mainstream art world. We wish to honor those artist and give them a space to share their work in one of the largest alternative art spaces in San Diego.

San Diego Public Library Screens Devil Girl From Mars as part of Schlockfest Film Series
Earthlings Are Inferior…But Your Men Will Do

The San Diego Public Library will screen the film Devil Girl from Mars on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor auditorium of the Central Library, located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego. The film is part of the library’s monthly SchlockFest film screenings, an homage to the classic B movies from Hollywood’s Golden Age.  This event is FREE to the public.

Dipped in a skintight, all black, vinyl get-up, Nyah, a statuesque Martian who just so happens to fit all the earthly va-va-voom requirements, is on a stud hunt. It seems the male population of the red planet is dying off and the women of Mars need men! Armed with a ray-gun and campy toaster-box robot side kick, she descends upon the Scottish moors on her way to London. Do the women of Earth put up a fight or do they use this opportunity to get rid of their male oppressors? Playing on emerging post World War II sexual themes of female domination, Devil Girl from Mars brings male fantasies to the big screen while still appealing the female spirit of resistance.
