Neighborhood House Association to Offer Free Public Mortgage Delinquency and Scam Awareness Workshop
With mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures still at an all time high, struggling homeowners are in critical need of professional housing assistance. In response to this demand, The Neighborhood House Association (NHA) HUD Counseling Program will offer two vital workshops free of charge to the public regarding mortgage delinquency and mortgage scams. The workshops will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 9a.m. to 3:30p.m. at NHA’s Howard H. Cary corporate building located at 5660 Copley Drive, San Diego, CA 92111.
NHA’s free workshop will provide attendees with up-to-date information and strategic advice that will be of particular interest to home-owners who have delinquent or defaulted mortgages, those with impending mortgage foreclosures as well as first-time home buyers struggling to enter the housing market.
“Many families across the county are facing bankruptcy, losing their homes or simply cannot afford to buy a home,” said Rudolph A. Johnson, III, President and CEO of Neighborhood House Association. “NHA’s goal is to assist families through all facets of the home buying process and ensure they are informed of their rights and how to avoid predatory lending or loan scams.”
Mortgage delinquency session topics will cover the foreclosure process, bank requirements for loan modifications, statistics on loan modifications, how to write a hardship letter, the value of a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) counselor during this process, available loan modification programs as well as options available other than loan modification.
Topics covered during the mortgage loan scam awareness portion will inform participants about how to identify a loan scam, reporting procedures for a loan scam, scam artist tactics and how a HUD housing counselor can assist during the process.

Meeting Planned to Discuss New Neighborhood Park in Chula Vista
The public is invited to attend a planning meeting regarding a new 3.9-acre neighborhood park in Chula Vista. The meeting will be held at the South Chula Vista Library in Room .B. located at 389 Orange Avenue on Tuesday, May 31, beginning at 6 p.m.
The location of the park to be discussed is adjacent to the South Chula Vista Library. As the City concludes the planning stages of the park improvements, staff is asking residents to attend an information presentation on the approved park master plan.
At the meeting, City staff will provide information on the funding of the park and give specifics on the park design and activities planned. Staff is also looking for public input on the name of the park. Residents may submit a form suggesting their ideas in a naming competition. Details of the competition will be provided at the meeting.
Preschool and Family Activities at the East Valley Branch Library
Our Children’s staff prepares story times filled with stories, songs, finger-plays, rhymes and crafts to encourage a love of reading and books. Library story times are a part of helping children develop the skills they need to be ready to read and learn. It is a fun and relaxing opportunity for adults and children to share together.
The East Valley Branch Library also offers the popular Family Movie Matinee, where a free showing of “I Am Number 4” is scheduled for Thursday, June 2, and “Gnomeo and Juliet” is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, in the Vineyard room of the East Valley Community Center.

Great Family Films Coming Soon to a Park Near You!
Region’s Largest Outdoor Movie Series Kicks Off June 3 in Heritage Park
The region’s largest free outdoor summer movies series returns this year with more locations and more great family films than ever before.
The San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation has teamed up with the cities of San Diego, National City, La Mesa, San Marcos, Oceanside, Poway and Lemon Grove and the U.S.S. Midway to expand the Summer Movies in the Park series.
“The series has gotten bigger, but our ticket prices haven’t gone up—this is still a great free activity for families and a great way to enjoy a summer evening in a park,” said Brian Albright, Director of the County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Forty movies are scheduled for local parks and pools—and deck of the Midway—making it the largest free movie series in the County. The program kicks off June 3 with The Princess Bride in Old Town’s Heritage Park and continues through Sept. 23. Other movies include box office hits Despicable Me, Toy Story 3 and Karate Kid (2010) and such classics as Grease and Back to the Future.
The movies will be shown in high-quality digital video on an enormous inflatable widescreen designed for large audiences. The series is produced by Fun Flicks, a company specializing in outdoor movies.
Pre-film activities include karaoke battles, games, music and contests. Participants are encouraged to bring a chair, blanket and refreshments.
The 2011 Summer Movies in the Park series is presented by Wilsey Asset Management and sponsored by the County Health and Human Services Agency’s It’s Up to Us campaign to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and its Healthy Works campaign for healthier schools and neighborhoods. Many other local organizations are also sponsors.

Soap Box Derby
May 28th from 9AM – 4:30 PM.
Dubbed the Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World, the All-American Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has been run in the United States since 1934. World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. Cars competing in this and related events are unpowered, relying completely upon gravity to move.
The goals of the Soap Box Derby program have not changed since it began in 1934. They are to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition, and the perseverance to continue a project once it has begun.
The next Race will be in Sherman Heights on 25th Street, between Market and Imperial Saturday, May 28, 2011. The Staging Area is at 25th and Market. The Finish Line is 2 blocks from the 25th and Commercial Trolley Stop. Race time: 9:00 am – 4.30 pm.
