Community Development Scholarship For Sweetwater High School Students
In order to increase access to higher education, the National City Chamber of Commerce has developed a scholarship program for Sweetwater High School Students interested in Community Development. The goal is to administer at least one scholarship per year to high achieving juniors and seniors with an academic GPA of at least 2.9, who are in need of financial assistance.
The National City Chamber of Commerce (NCCC) understands that the best way to invest in the future of National City’s economic development is to invest in the education of the youth. The Chamber realizes that a large percentage of National City youth may not be attending college due to a lack of financial resources. According to the 2000 US Census, 19.6% of National City’s families live below poverty level. The US Census Bureau also reports that in the year 2000 only 8.9% of our community members has a bachelor’s degree or higher.
This year the scholarship amounts to $1,000.00, which will be allocated to two students. The funds were donated by OMC Technical Solutions, a chamber member since January of 2010. The CEO of OMC Technical Solutions, Martin Moreno, expressed his desire to give back to the community: “education is the cornerstone to economic prosperity and giving to youth whom are dedicated to community development will only strengthen National City’s social capital.”
As we gain momentum the NCCC hopes to increase the scholarship amount each year and maintain the ability to contribute to the education of multiple students. The National City Chamber of Commerce hopes that the new scholarship program will make a positive impact on the community. Sweetwater High School Principal and NCCC Board Member, Roman Del Rosario states: “This scholarship is an example of how the Chamber is committed to the empowerment of the students of Sweetwater High School …As the principal of the only public high school in National City, this is exactly the type of community support that our students need and deserve.”

Redistricting 2011: It’s Time to be Heard
Public Can Now Submit Redistricting Plans and Suggestions Online
We want to hear from you! Everything the public needs to submit redistricting plans and suggestions for San Diego County’s 2011 redistricting process is now available on the County’s redistricting website.
From now until May 9, members of the public can submit their proposed plans for one or more of the County’s five supervisorial districts using the new 2010 Census data.
In County redistricting, a “plan” means a set of data that assigns Census tracts or blocks to a particular district. The 2010 Census data for building these plans is now online, along with detailed instructions, definitions and submission guidelines.
The public should submit plans as electronic files. Each publicly-submitted plan will be published online and forwarded to the County’s Redistricting Advisory Committee for consideration.
In addition to submitting redistricting plans, residents are encouraged to contribute ideas and suggestions about County redistricting to the Redistricting Advisory Committee in person at any of the Committee’s meetings or by email or U.S. mail. A meeting schedule and contact information is posted on the redistricting website.
The County’s Redistricting Advisory Committee is the citizen’s panel charged with gathering public opinion on how to adjust the County’s supervisorial district boundaries to balance their populations. Such balancing is required by law every ten years following the Census.
At its upcoming public meetings, including an evening meeting in each district, the Committee will consider the public’s plans and suggestions.
Ultimately, the Committee must recommend no more than three proposed redistricting plans to the Board of Supervisors. The Board will adopt a final redistricting plan that takes effect in early September.
