Students Helping Students: UC San Diego and Logan Heights Library Partnership Offers Academic Support and Success to Community

The University of California, San Diego and the Logan Heights Branch Library are partnering together to host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m., March 29 at the library branch to showcase a new virtual tutoring program for elementary school children in the Logan Heights area.
Through the new partnership, students from UC San Diego’s Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) and Student Promoted Access Center for Education (SPACES) will volunteer at the library to tutor and help K-5 students online and in person.
At the open house, community members will learn about the online/virtual tutoring with real UC San Diego students, how to apply to college and their financial aid options. In addition, UC San Diego students from SPACES will provide presentations on what it’s like to be a student at UC San Diego
“As the leading research university in the region, we feel it’s our responsibility to help young students in our community, as well as students on our campus,” said Rafael Hernandez, director of EAOP. “In the Logan Heights area, there are ten elementary schools. With this commitment from UC San Diego, we are helping these students with their studies so they can one day attend college––hopefully UC San Diego––and pursue their dreams of higher education.”
The event will feature remarks from Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and the San Diego Public Library Director, Deborah L. Barrow.
“Because of the commitment and support of many individuals, including support from the library and UC San Diego, this partnership has become beneficial to both students that participate from our community and students at UC San Diego,” said Eileen Labrador, Branch Manager of the Logan Heights Branch Library. “Students are given the opportunity to grow academically, gain a sense of empowerment and social responsibility and discover the possibilities of attending UC San Diego through the e-tutorial and mentorship program.”
The University of California’s EAOP program, which has a branch at each of the 10 UC campuses, is dedicated to providing academic and college prep resources and information for low-income, underrepresented students.
EAOP works closely with several other campus programs, including SPACES, an on campus program designed to provide an environment for student growth and development and a foundation to create leadership and unity through community engagement.
Other event sponsors include UC San Diego Student Affairs, the Logan Heights Branch Library and Friends and UC San Diego’s admissions and financial aid offices.
