El Cajon Library Hosts Multicultural Fiesta

Event also launches County-wide ‘El Día de los Niños’ Celebration

La Fiesta del Pueblo Ballet Folklorico.

   The El Cajon Library, 201 E. Douglas Av, will host an afternoon of entertainment, children’s activities, refreshments, community information, and much more, in its second annual Multicultural Family Fiesta, Saturday, April 2, from 12 Noon to 3 p.m. San Diego County Library Director José Aponte will officially open the event which honors the rich cultures that make up the El Cajon community. The Fiesta is free of charge and open to the public.

   The event also launches the county-wide celebration of the national El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book), with a free book give-away and visit from local author Marta Arroyo (“La Fiesta y el Mariachi”). El Día de los Niños highlights the importance of childhood literacy.

   The Fiesta will feature student dancers, “La Fiesta del Pueblo Ballet Folklorico,” of the Cajon Valley School District, the award-winning Dilek and her Middle Eastern Dance Troupe, and the well-known “Junior Crew” drum corps. The drum team is made up of young percussionists led by El Cajon musician Chris Rubio, with the goal of teaching youngsters to lead a drug-free life. El Cajon Police Officer Tom Winslow will present a K-9 dog demonstration with his canine partner Rico. The El Cajon Fire Department will lead fire engine tours. Many local organizations will be on hand at the information fair, such as Chaldean-Middle Eastern Social Services, the Boy Scouts, the National Children’s Study and a number of health-related groups.

   A wide variety of local merchants and restaurants have donated refreshments from around the globe for the festivities. 

   The Fiesta follows a morning Community Forum hosted by the El Cajon Police Department at the Ronald Reagan Center, adjacent to the library, from 10 a.m. – 12 Noon. With the theme, “Youth Access to Alcohol and Drugs,” the public forum offers a variety of family-friendly activities.

Tracing the evolution of Cuban dance from African roots to today’s most popular dances

   Omo Aché Cuban Arts presents a dance workshop “Roots of Cuban Dance: Congo, Rumba, Son & Casino” on Sunday, March 27, 2011, 2:00-3:50 p.m., Stage 7 School of Dance, 3980 30th Street, San Diego, CA 92104. Cost: $15 in advance online, www.omoachecubanculture.org, $20 at the door. This unique dance workshop taught by master artist Juan Carlos Blanco from Havana, Cuba, introduces students to the historical lineage of Cuban dance starting with powerful Afro-Cuban dances of the Congo tradition. Showing how these dances mixed with passionate Spanish flamenco to create the soulful Cuban expression of Rumba.  Rumba evolved in to the intimate Cuban social dance known as Son at the end of the 19th century.  Son mixed with American swing in the 1940’s developing in to the dynamic popular dance known as Casino in Cuba (and “salsa” around the world). Prepare yourself to be moved by history!!

16th Annual  Imagen Foundation Entertainment Industry Career Conference  at Pasadena

   The Imagen Foundation will be holding its 16th Annual Entertainment Industry Career Conference on Saturday, April 2nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Pasadena Convention Center, located at 300 East Green Street. The organization, whose mission includes expanding opportunities for Latinos in the entertainment industry, is encouraging anyone who is interested in a career in entertainment to attend the conference. In addition to a job fair, the conference will include workshops covering such topics as resume and interview tips, dressing for success, how to pitch your own show, and careers in new media. Participating companies to date include Warner Bros., NBC Universal, CBS, Fox Television Stations, Disney ABC Television Group, ABC7, KTLA and the Directors Guild Producer Training Plan.

    Admission to the conference is $25 if prepaid by March 25th; thereafter and at the door the cost will be $35. Parking at the Convention Center will be $9, or attendees can arrive via the Metro Gold Line.

Old Mission Rotary and the Francis Parker Interact Clubs announce So You Think You’ve Got Talent competition

   On Saturday, May 7, 2011, a dozen local performers will have an opportunity to showcase their talents and to compete for the grand prize of $1000 in San Diego’s 1st Annual So You Think You’ve Got Talent competition.

   Jointly produced by the Old Mission Rotary and the Francis Parker Interact Clubs, proceeds for this year’s So You Think You’ve Got Talent San Diego will benefit Reality Changers, an organization that helps inner-city kids succeed in school and become successful first-generation college students.

   Auditions for the contest are still being solicited. Performers of most any variety, including vocalists, dancers, bands, magicians, and comedians are being sought.
