COMMUNITY NOTES:

“Las Mañanitas” Celebrating the Legacy of Cesar Chavez

Buoyant voices and the smiling faces of young drummers, will mark the birthday of Cesar Chavez as the celebration breakfast of the Cesar Chavez Service Club comes to life on March 25th at the Jacobs Center. The theme of the event is Las Mañanitas, joyous birthday celebration.

Gilbert Padilla and Mr. Chavez began organizing in the 1950’s with the Community Services Organization (CSO), the precursor to the United Farm Workers Eliseo Medina, International Secretary-Treasurer of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and long time confidant to Chavez and Padilla will present the tribute in honor of Mr. Padilla.

Proceeds from the Las Mañanitas breakfast will benefit the Cesar Chavez Service Club, a nonprofit organization that provides leadership development programs in public and private schools throughout San Diego. According to San Diego Unified School District board president, Richard Barrera, “The Club inspires young people to believe in themselves and to know that they can make a difference. You’ll hear them saying, as Cesar Chavez did, ‘Yes, it can be done,’ or ‘Si Se Puede!’”

Las Mañanitas will be held at the Jacobs Center, Market Creek Plaza, 404 Euclid Avenue, San Diego, 92113. Doors open at 7:00 AM, with the program presented from 7:30 to 9:00 AM. Tickets can be purchased for $35 by calling (619) 347-4342 or email: linda.chavezclubs@cox.net.
