Global Photography Movement “Help-Portrait” Gives Back to San Diego Needy Families

On Saturday, December 4, 2010, dozens of local professional photographers and volunteers will participate in the international volunteer movement called Help-Portrait to provide free holiday portraits to needy individuals and families. Organized by the youth media literacy program Outside the Lens and the University of San Diego Psychology Club, the local component of this event will include participation by seven professional photographers, twenty volunteers, hair and make-up support by students of Saco Salon and Academy, a Kids Creative Zone, and food donations from Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, and Chick-Fil-a.

Founded in 2009 by celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart, the now-annual event is held on the first Saturday of December. Thanks to modern technology and sites such as Facebook and Twitter, the inaugural event reached over 40,000 needy families with the support of more than 8,300 photographers and volunteers in 42 countries. “Poverty steals a lot of things, like your home, car and food, but it also steals something on the inside. Help-Portrait feeds that something on the inside,” states Help-Portrait Event Coordinator Annie Downs.

This year’s event in San Diego will take place on Saturday, December 4, 2010, from 9:00am-12:00pm at the Linda Vista Presbyterian Church: 2130 Ulrich St. San Diego, CA 92111. There are currently sufficient resources to provide for up to 75 needy families. A total of 37 families have been confirmed to date. Anyone who would like to receive a free holiday portrait or who would like to donate additional resources for this event may sign up by contacting Outside the Lens at 858-349-7578 or by emailing rachel@outsidethelens.org.
