Since Program Launch, Barona Has Invested Nearly $1 Million to Schools Statewide

Mount Miguel High School students accept a $5,000 education grant from the Barona Band of Mission Indians with 78th District Assemblymember Marty Block and Barona Tribal Councilwoman Beth Glasco.

Recently, staff and students of Mount Miguel High School joined 78th District Assembly-member Marty Block to accept a $5,000 education grant from the Barona Band of Mission Indians as part of the Barona Education Grant program. The check was presented by Barona Tribal Councilwoman Beth Glasco.

As schools across the state continue to grapple with the reality of budget cuts, the Barona Band of Mission Indians has been sharing resources through its Barona Education Grant Program. Since 2006, Barona has awarded nearly $1 million to over 185 schools statewide.

Mount Miguel High School will use the grant money to purchase needed library books with topics ranging from English, science and economics to career training, college information and college entrance testing.

“We hope that this grant will give the students at Mount Miguel High School the resources to advance their learning now, and just as importantly, help them pursue future opportunities,” said Barona Tribal Chairman Edwin “Thorpe” Romero. “The students and staff here couldn’t be more deserving, and we hope the contribution can build upon the success of the school.”

The Barona Education Grant Program is the first of its kind in California created and administered by a Tribal Government. The goal of the program is to create strong educational opportunities for the children of California building upon the success of the Barona Indian Charter School, which operates under a continuous improvement model.

Schools throughout California can apply for educational grants from Barona to purchase much-needed supplies and materials that promote academic improvement. Each grant awarded by the Barona Education Grant Program is $5,000. Applications can be downloaded at http://barona-nsn.gov/education/education.html.
