40th Chicano Park Day Celebration
 This Famnily Celebration is FREE & Open to the Public

    The 40th Annual Chicano Park Day will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, in historic Chicano Park, located in the Barrio Logan community, south of downtown San Diego. This family event is free and open to the public. The theme for this year’s celebration is “40 Años de la Tierra Mia: Aquí Estamos y No Nos Vamos”

    Established by Chicano activists on April 22, 1970, Chicano Park has received international recognition as a major public art site for its commanding mural paintings of the past and present struggle of Mexican and Chicano history.

    Visitors to Chicano Park Day will experience traditional music and dance, including one of the most beautiful performances of Aztec Indigenous dance, coordinated by Toltecas en Aztlán. Other dance groups as well as musical acts and speakers are featured on two stages.

    In addition, there will be a display of classic low rider cars presented by Amigos Car Club and children’s art workshop led by muralist Victor Ochoa. Food, arts and crafts vendors will be selling their specialties throughout Chicano Park, as well as informational booths. 

Positions Open on Proposition O Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee

    The Sweetwater Union High School District announces the opening of three Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee positions. Proposition O was passed under the rules of Proposition 39, which directs that the Board of Trustees appoint a Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee to monitor bond expenditures.

    This Committee is responsible for reviewing expenditures related to the District’s $644 million general obligation bond, Proposition “O,” approved by the voters in November, 2006.

    Currently one committee member is needed in each of the following categories:

    · Business Organization Member; · Senior Citizen Organization Member; · Bone Fide Taxpayer Association Member

    Community members who would like to participate on this committee should write a letter of interest and send a resume to Jaime Ortiz, Sweetwater’s Proposition “O” Program Manager by Thursday, April 29, 2010. Vacancies on GCCCD’s Citizens Bond Oversight Committee

    With three seats on the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District’s Citizens Bond Oversight Commitee to be filled in July, civic-minded East County residents are invited to apply for the openings by the May 27, 2010 deadline.

    A qualified professional in the financial or accounting field is sought to fill the seat on the district’s Proposition R Citizens Bond Oversight Committee left open by the completion of a four-year term by CBOC Chairwoman Karen Lanning. All CBOC members are limited to two, two-year terms. Two additional seats open on the 11-member CBOC are required to be filled by a representative of a college advisory committee and a student representaive of Cuyamaca.

    A form to apply for appointment by the governing board is posted at www.gcccd.edu  under “Construction News.” Forms are to be submitted to the GCCCD Chancellor’s Office by the May 27 deadline.

 Candidate Forum by Southwest Chula Vista Civic Association

    Chula Vista Candidate’s forum will be held at Lauderbach Center, 333 Oxford St (across from Post Office), between Third & Fourth Ave, Monday, April 26, 6:00pm.

    6:00PM-7:30 Mayor, City Attorney and council candidates will have at least 9 minutes to talk and/or answer questions as they choose.

    7:30 PM until 8:30 Pm Prop G, Pro and Con representatives will give a presentation.

 Art Show Depicts Preschoolers’ Views of America

    More than 8,000 San Diego preschoolers from the Neighborhood House Association’s (NHA) Head Start program will have their art work featured in Art Fest 2010. This year’s theme is “Picturing America” and includes displays of art inspired by American artists. The entire event is open to the public.  Central Library Screens Digital Stories from Crawford High School

    The City of San Diego Public Library will host a screening of Refugee Experiences @ Crawford High, digital stories of refugee students at Crawford High School, in conjunction with the ongoing One Book, One San Diego community reading campaign, on Wednesday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor auditorium of the Central Library located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego. This event is free to the public.

 City Launches Local Rebate Program

    On Thursday, the City of Chula Vista will launch the new Chula Vista Appliance Exchange Rebate Program in partnership with the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce. The program will provide an instant $20 rebate for community members who purchase high efficiency refrigerators, clothes washers, and room air conditioners from a participating Chula Vista appliance store and install the new appliance at a Chula Vista address. The energy-saving new appliances must replace existing appliances which are to be properly disposed through a certified recycler.

 Community Invited to the 2ND “Green Street” and 7TH Annual Community Clean-Up Day in San Ysidro

The San Diego Redevelopment Agency, in partnership with Urban Corps of San Diego County and the San Ysidro Business Association, will host a volunteer community service event in San Ysidro on Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to participate in this event and “clean up San Ysidro”.

 Volunteers are to meet at the Community Service Center located at 663 East San Ysidro Boulevard. Urban Corps staff, Business Association staff and dozens of youth corpsmembers will be on-hand to coordinate volunteer service among area residents.
