LEARN, the San Diego County Library’s adult literacy services, in partnership with the Laubach Literacy Council, will be hosting a free tutor training for volunteers interested in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult learners from other countries. The two-part training will be held on consecutive Saturdays, November 14th and 21st, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Community Room at the Ray and Joan Kroc Center, 6845 University Avenue, San Diego, CA 92115. Prior registration is required and tutors must attend both sessions. Opportunities to tutor are available countywide in library branches as well as other sites; volunteer tutors are especially needed in East County, San Marcos, and Ramona. For more information or to register, please contact Dr. Charles Ross at (619) 442-1481 or email intgallery@aol. com or Arlene Atkinson at (619) 441-8863 or email arlene @rfatkinson.com.
The training will be led by Carolyn McGavock, an ESL instructor for the San Diego Community College District. McGavock has been teaching ESL since 1991 and has taught in a variety of program settings in California, New York, and Washington.
Once tutors have completed the two Saturday sessions, they will be matched with English Language Learners. Tutoring can be one-on-one or in small group settings. Tutors and learners schedule sessions at their convenience and close to their place of residence.
