Fun for Everyone this Halloween

Halloween Literacy Activities Planned at Local Barnes & Nobel

Come join Rolling Readers as they celebrate Halloween with authors, books and treats!

This Halloween weekend Rolling Readers will be hosting a 3-day Bookfair at the Point Loma Barnes & Noble Bookstar, complete with authors, story time, activities and fun! A percentage of proceeds from the weekend will go directly towards providing brand new books to young students in local high-need elementary schools.

Events kick-off, Friday, October 30th, with acclaimed author Elissa Brent Weissman, who will be visiting Dewey Elementary School, located just down the road from Bookstar. This is a low-income, high-need school which is served by several Rolling Readers volunteers and has a large military student body. Ms. Weissman will be sharing with several 3rd grade classes the importance of reading and the road to becoming a writer.

On Saturday, October 31st students, families and the rest of the community are invited to attend the Bookfair, dressed in their favorite costume or craziest socks! Ms. Weissman will be returning for another reading at 11am, complete with her crazy socks, and will sign copies of her books. At 3pm, Dr. Lucille Burbank, long-time Rolling Reader volunteer at Dewey Elementary and author of the upcoming The Inspiration of Sesame Street, will read aloud several festive and spooky stories, getting all attendees in the Halloween spirit! The Bookfair will continue on Sunday, November 1st, with another story time and free goodies for the kids.

A Bookfair voucher will ensure that a percentage of net sales from Barnes & Noble Bookstar purchases will be donated to Rolling Readers (Oct.30 thru Nov. 1 only). Vouchers can be found at www.rollingreaders.org

Event Location: Barnes and Noble Bookstar 3150 Rosecrans Place, San Diego, CA 92110

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a time to gather family and friends to celebrate the lives of those who have passed. Since 1995, the Center’s free community event celebrating this holiday has become an annual tradition for families in North County and beyond.

The event is centered on Muerte de todos ofrenda de participación (Death Comes to Everyone A Participatory Offering), an artwork in the Center Museum’s permanent collection created by Mexico City Artist, Eloy Tarcisio. On the evening of November 1st, the public will participate in the installation by creating their own memorials in remembrance of loved ones while enjoying live music, entertainment, crafts and traditional Mexican refreshments including Mexican hot chocolate and pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread). While at the event, attendees may also visit the Center Museum and enjoy the current exhibition, Quint: Three Decades of Contemporary Art.
