The Nutcracker
San Diego Civic Theatre – Accompanied by Classics Philharmonic and the San Diego Symphony

The Nutcracker returns to the San Diego Civic Theatre for the 2013 Holiday Season! A yearly favorite and holiday tradition for thousands of San Diegans, California Ballet Company’s The Nutcracker is the only production in town accompanied by the San Diego Symphony.

Choreographed by Director Maxine Mahon, and featuring Tchaikovsky’s score, this year’s production boasts a seasoned cast including Guest Artists Corey Stearns, principal with American Ballet Theatre, and Freelance Artist Sergey Kheylik .California Ballet dancers featured on the program include Ballerina Chie Kudo, Principal Vitaliy Nechay, and Soloists Rebecca Correia, Ilana Jonas, Oscar Burciaga, and Hugo Carreón.

The Nutcracker will run at the San Diego Civic Theatre from December 14-15, 2013 with the Classics Philharmonic and December 18-22, 2013 with the San Diego Symphony. California Ballet Music Director John Stubbs will conduct both orchestras. Patrons are invited to attend the Sugar Plum Parties to meet cast members following every matinee performance.

California Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker is one of many opportunities for the company to reach out into the community. The Sharing the Art Program offers the experience of professional ballet performances to community groups who have limited or no access to live theater. Since its inception in 2005, this program has made over 40,000 tickets available to children and adults with life threatening diseases through Rady Children’s Hospital and Scripps Healthcare, to military families through Operation Homefront and to underserved and abused children through The Children’s Initiative, Episcopal Community Services and The Monarch School. California Ballet will host its fourth annual Military Night at The Nutcracker on December 19, 2013 at 7:00pm. Free and low-cost tickets will be made available to San Diego military and their families to honor their service to our country.

Maxine Mahon’s The Nutcracker has a cast of 160 including 35 professional dancers and apprentices, and alternating casts of children auditioned from the California Ballet School and the community. Director Mahon says “The Nutcracker celebrates the power of human imagination, which children have in abundance. To make it sophisticated steals the charm. The Nutcracker possesses the power to make people happy during the Holidays.”
