<p>Southwestern College could soon be building student housing to help provide an affordable alternative as rental rates continue to rise in our region.</p>

<p>The local community college, which has its main campus in Chula Vista, in addition to campuses in National City, San Ysidro, and Otay mesa, was awarded nearly $1 million in state planning grants to study the feasibility of building student housing.</p>

<p>A girls’ Catholic high school in San Diego closed after just nine days of in-class schooling after two new COVID-19 cases were reported among students.</p>
<p>Our Lady of Peace (OLP) in North Park had invested over $500,000 in modifications to help protect students and teachers from the spread of the virus, but went back to online distance learning to prevent more new cases.</p>

<p>For the first time in history, Latinos are the largest racial group among California students accepted into the prestigious University of California system, although it is not clear how many will accept the offer and attend one of the system’s 10 universities.</p>
<p>Latinos make up 36% of California students granted admission, followed by Asians at 35%, Whites at 21%, and Blacks at 5%, with 44% of all freshmen being first-generation Americans.</p>
