The great American educator, John Dewey, repeatedly made the case that students did not fail, schools failed students. This principle is one of the canons of Chicana/o or La Raza Studies. For the most part, the American public schools wrote them off as failures, blaming it on their culture-called them culturally deprived or culturally disadvantaged.

Before the DREAM students made their historic stance in Tucson, Ariz. in mid-May to stage a sit-in in Sen. John McCain’s office, and thereby subject themselves to deportation proceedings, this Sun city had already been in the eye of the storm.
First Person:
By Al Carlos Hernandez
I am scheduled to be a keynote speaker for the seniors’ graduation banquet at a private Christian college were I teach public relations, media management and journalism. I am lauded for teaching innovative topics in real time so, consistent with that, here is an annotated version of the speech … which students will, not doubt, follow along on their iphones – while they are pretending to be listening – when I am actually giving the speech.
