<p> History was made the other day in Arizona. A Republican-led citizen group turned in a record setting 18,315 signatures to the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office in a recall petition with the infamous Arizona State Senate President Russell Pearce targeted for removal from office.</p>
<p> The 18,315 is over double the 7,756 signatures required by law for a recall election.</p>

<p> In California, local governments are required to study how new development impacts the surrounding environment, and rightly so. Before buildings are put up, the public deserves to know if there will be more traffic impacts, if it will harm wildlife or if there’s a possibility that nearby creeks or beaches will be polluted as a result.</p>

<p> Higher than expected tax receipts have set off a new debate in Sacramento about what to do with the new monies.</p>
<p> California Governor Jerry Brown said that he wants to stabilize public education funding and repay past borrowing.</p>
<p> Meanwhile, Democrats in the state assembly recently voted to restore $440 million to child care programs that help low-income families find work.</p>

<p> Americans love winners, and if President Obama scores more victories like the ones he has enjoyed over the last two months, he will easily win re-election.</p>
<p> For the first two years of his term, Obama, to the chagrin of his supporters, mostly remained silent while his opponents maliciously maligned him.</p>

<p> If you’re an average woman, you want two children, according to various surveys. That means you’ll spend about five years of your life trying to become pregnant, being pregnant or recovering from pregnancy, and 30 years trying to avoid it.</p>

The House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement held a hearing a couple weeks ago on the H-2A agricultural guest worker visa program—a program that, like much of our current immigration system, isn’t optimal but has proved doggedly resistant to reform.

<p> We should be able to agree that providing a high-quality education for all our children, regardless of their background, is a critical investment in our future. And when we tell our youngest that the sky is the limit, we must keep our word by working to eliminate any barriers to their success.</p>

Days before in his Inaugural Address President Abraham Lincoln summed up the differences between the south and the north saying, “One section of our country believes slavery is right and ought to be extended, while the other believes it is wrong and ought not to be extended. This is the only substantial dispute.”</p>
