<p> Faced with budget cuts, K-12 public schools in California are grappling with terrible choices about what should get the ax. A new survey of almost 400 schools finds the cuts over the last two years were felt everywhere from grounds upkeep to instructional material to school nurses.</p>

<p> As municipal government and public agency budgets continue to feel the ripple effect of the nation-wide recession, we have begun to observe one of either or a combination of reforms, budget cuts, increased scrutiny of wasteful spending followed immediately by an action plan, or some simply refuse to make reforms and/or adopt aggressive economic development strategies opting for new taxes/fees or tax increases to cope.</p>

<p> The oil drilling explosion that killed 11 people on April 20th and the spill now killing massive amounts of wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico is a sign. It’s a sign of how bad our nation’s oil addiction has gotten and of how much we need to launch a sustainable energy revolution.</p>

<p><strong> </strong> Memorial Day is a time to celebrate and remember the servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives to defend our values. As we reflect on their acts of sacrifice and heroism, we are also reminded of what these brave Americans experience while deployed overseas fighting for our freedom.</p>

<p> During election years, we hear candidates complain a lot about wasteful government programs. But a recent study by the nonprofit Guttmacher Institute provides startling news about one California program that has solved 52% of a social problem in just 13 years, and saved the state billions of dollars in the process.</p>

<p> The mainstream media should provide more balanced coverage of pro-immigrant rallies.</p>
<p> On April 15, many in the mainstream media devoted constant coverage to the tea party protests, which drew no more than a few thousand people at the most popular events and were sparsely attended at others.</p>

<p> Before unveiling his 2010-2011 budget revision last week, Arnold Schwarzenegger said that he believed the state budget should be “a reflection of what we in California value most and also it should be a representation of what our administration stands for, in good times or in bad.”</p>

<p> The tearful 15-year-old girl told her San Diego Police sergeant father that she had been raped in the hills while riding her horse in the hills above her house by three Mexican men and a Mexican woman attacked and raped her. He called out the troops.</p>
