<p> During his State of the State address, Jerry Brown alluded to the deep spending cuts ahead as he tries to eliminate California’s $25 billion budget deficit. He also made it clear that the cuts will be much, much worse if voters don’t approve (or aren’t even allowed to vote on) a $12 billion tax extension to fund public schools.</p>

<p> Sometimes the most important lessons learned at school don’t come from a classroom.</p>
<p> They come from how a school reacts to ugly incidents of bias and prejudice. When a principal learns that nasty slurs are being used in the school or that students are being bullied because of their race or ethnicity, it can be tempting to deny it.</p>
<p> It can be tempting to resort to the old refrain, “That doesn’t happen at our school.”</p>

<p> As a professor of ethnic studies, I feel under assault.</p>
<p> At the beginning of this year, Arizona’s HB 2281 targeting ethnic studies in Tucson’s public school system went into effect. For those of us who teach ethnic studies — for all educators — this ban represents a call to arms.</p>
<p> Of course, I mean that figuratively. HB 2281 apparently does not.</p>

<p> Having been born a year after the Civil Rights Act was signed, I’m disheartened that resegregation of our schools is now an established fact.</p>
<p> In the 2006-07 school year, more than 50 years after the Supreme Court’s landmark desegregation case, Brown v. Board of Education, approximately 40 percent of black and Latino students attended schools that were 90 to 100 percent minority.</p>
