The Metabolic Syndrome is a group of disorders that occur at the same time and are linked to a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. The Metabolic Syndrome is diagnosed when 3 of the following factors are present: high blood pressure, high glucose (blood sugar), high triglycerides, low HDL (good, protective) cholesterol, and abdominal obesity (belly fat).

The San Diego Cesar E. Chavez Commemoration Committee in partnership with the University of California San Diego Early Academic Outreach Program have joined forces to sponsor the 12th Annual Cesar E. Chavez High School Essay Contest. The essay contest, to honor the life and achievements of the late civil rights and labor leader, is opened to students in grades 9-12.
