The 45th Annual PDK/Gallup Poll of the Public Attitudes Toward the Public Schools was released this week and it took a close look at the new Common Core Standards being implemented across the country. What they found was that 62% of the folks never heard of the Common Core and those that have heard of it either didn’t understand it, or didn’t endorse it. Yet, these Standards are being described as “one of the most ambitious initiatives in our lifetime.”

America, home of the free and the land of opportunity- only if you’re a legal citizen, of course. Working with an array of students from different backgrounds, we have seen our fair share of issues. However, one issue continues to go unspoken: undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S as children.

In 2008, San Diego County had the third largest population of undocumented immigrants in California. An estimated population of about 200,000, many immigrants made the trip across the border before well before their 18th birthday, making the American Dream their only way of life.
