<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Logan Heights Branch Library will host a grand opening event of the SDSU Chicana/o Archive Project Exhibit:&nbsp; on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room. The bilingual exhibit is the result of four years of work by a committee of dedicated community activists, librarians, faculty, students and administrators and celebrates San Diego’s Chicana/o community and movement.</p>

<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Durante mi etapa de funcionaria de admisiones universitarias el 1 de abril era muy especial porque compartíamos con los estudiantes las decisiones sobre admisiones. Aunque algunos estudiantes sabían exactamente qué hacer y cumplían fácilmente con el plazo del 1 de mayo para darnos su decisión, muchos estudiantes latinos que eran los primeros de su familia en ir a la universidad necesitaban un poco más de ayuda en el proceso.</p>

For Mexican Americans, Cinco de Mayo should be a time of honor and the celebration of a great victory. Cinco de Mayo represents our Mexican compatriots’ victory over the superior forces from France. The battle at the Puebla was also a battle between the classes of Mexico, aristocrats against the indigenous population, the poor, the farmers, and the people who were considered commoners.

<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; On May 5, 1862, Mexican troops defeated an invading French army in the outskirts of Puebla, a city around 60 miles east of Mexico City. How did events come to this point; what were French troops doing in Mexico and why?</p>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; On September 15, 1810, a priest, Miguel Hidalgo, sounded the church bells to unite Mexicans in a war of independence from Spain. Independence was declared the following day, September 16th. But it took Mexicans 11 years to oust the Spaniards.</p>
